Born in Indianapolis in 1960, Michelle Samerjan seemed an unlikely candidate to bring a fusion of western and eastern culture. But the journey began simply with a mother who was an artist who believed her daughter at an extremely young age should be taught the technical aspects of art.
Throughout her youth, Michelle continued her study of art, but with her family’s move to Los Angeles in her late teens, Michelle followed in her father’s footsteps in the textile business. Through international travel, she was exposed to many cultures and their approach to fabric design and production.
In her early twenties, an opportunity arose where she could combine her artistic abilities, knowledge of fabric and color and plug it into the right 3 dimensional space. The diverse creative and business communities in Los Angeles were ideal candidates for creating unique environments where art and design intersected with a studied approach to space.
In her 30’s a personal tragedy of a miscarriage brought her back to a place where her art became an outlet for the beginning of healing. As if guided by a greater power, she found herself blending elements of her artistic training with spiritual antiquities from the Far East that she had begun to collect. These amulets and talismans from past centuries formed a spiritual bridge to her expression and the search for harmony and enlightenment. The path and philosophy of Buddhism that had become intertwined with so many Asian cultures became a portal to a view of life that is expressed in each original.
Today, collectors worldwide enjoy not only the visual aspects of each original, but also the stories, philosophical and mystical nature that defines Michelle’s style.
She is perhaps the only Artist who can claim, that each work is a collaborative effort with artisans from many countries, and each work derives its beginnings from antiquities from long ago.
Michelle Samerjan. Art and vision centuries in the making.
