“Powerful art is like good wine,” says Lorna York. “It only gets better over time.” After a quarter-century selling art (if not wine), Lorna should know. She began dealing art on the East Coast a quarter-century ago, handling editions and original works by established modern masters. Many a gallerist has started her/his career proffering paper Picassos, Miros, and Chagalls, coming thus to understand both the monetary and the metaphysical value of all art, whether Old Master or contemporary, and Lorna is no exception. Since moving to California a decade ago, she has thrown her lot in with living artists, creating a gallery in downtown La Jolla Village that vibrates with a smart, elegant, yet challenging dynamic. The work Lorna shows at the gallery she has named after her daughter Madison is neither so abstruse as to baffle its audience nor so pedestrian as to bore it; the artists she exhibits work in traditional media but not in traditional ways, practicing fresh styles and saying distinctive things. The Madison Gallery’s sensibility is sophisticated yet welcoming, providing lucid installations of art in a genial, atmospheric setting that complement – and compliment – artwork and art viewer alike.
