Katrin Möller

BIOGRAPHY

German, b.1972
Taking in and distilling the wide breadth of nature and the experience of life, Katrin Möller’s new paintings reveal a repetitious, organized, multi-layered structure. Much like the highly refined cellular structures underlying the chaos and entropy of nature, Möller’s paintings reveal the organic rhythms of life. These paintings resemble memories, after-images, and scientific close-ups of plant life, water flow, and energy movement. Though enlivened with this energy, Möller retains a space of stillness and contemplation within her work. In this way, the paintings are reflections on both external perception and internal process. This depth of experience is expressed through a seemingly calm surface, but her paintings invite an intimate exchange that rewards the viewer with minute color shifts and translucent layers that imbue the experience with progression. A calm space of examination and inquiry is created through Möller’s attentive eye and exacting hand.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For me, painting is an intuitive process inspired by organic forms, rhythms and pat-terns in nature, science (landscapes, formations, light, smell, taste, etc).

A common theme that surfaces in my work is a feeling of lightness and balance; a place of contemplation. My paintings are a quiet, calm reflection about the things around and inside of me.

Objects float. Lines meander. Color is either soft or minimal. It is often necessary to be intimate with the work to notice subtle shifts in color, and from color to translucency. Viewed from certain angles these shifts become almost imperceptible.

Although, for the most part the work embodies a certain calmness, within it lies quiet movement and progression. Depth is created through translucency and the layering of objects as they flow across, into, or out from the picture plane.
The repetition of an object or line becomes an abstraction in pattern. Even when repetition quickens, there is a movement beyond chaos to resolution.
