James Verbicky is no stranger to persistence, and his new exhibition focuses entirely on that. Through diligence, hard work and no small amount of talent, Verbicky has transformed himself from a young painter journeying from British Columbia with little more than a 1963 Pontiac Catalina bursting with paintings, to a successful abstract painter thriving in the international art market.

Verbicky's solo exhibition, "Momentum," installed now in the Madison Gallery in La Jolla, possesses a sense of vague beauty, of elusive scenes that challenge the eye and colors that feed it.

"My work brings forward the perceptible but not the obvious," Verbicky said, likening this atmosphere to life itself, and the elusive nature of the small steps we all take as we strive toward accomplishing our goals. Verbicky himself, rarely the tortured artist, sees no goal as beyond him.

After years of struggle, Verbicky received an "Extraordinary Ability" green card and now resides in Orange County. He has exhibited in galleries all over the country, has worked with numerous charities and nonprofit organizations and is counted in many prominent private and celebrity collections. He was recently featured on Extra! Television, invited to exhibit at the 2008 Emmy Awards Gift Suite and concluded 2008 with an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris.

"It was an incredible honor," Verbicky said. "My experience there has contributed greatly to my latest collection."
