Matt Shlian & Jason Sims “Spatial Acuity”
September 22nd – November 2nd, 2018
Solana Beach, California – Madison Gallery presents Spatial Acuity, opening on September 22nd, 2018, featuring the work of Michigan based paper engineer Matthew Shlian and Australian bred light sculptor Jason Sims. The exhibition examines the detailed exploration of perception, light and space.
Self-described paper engineer, Matthew Shlian’s work is rooted in print media, book arts and commercial design. Beginning with an initial fold, a single action causes a transfer of energy to subsequent folds, which ultimately manifest in drawing and three-dimensional forms. Matthew uses his engineering skills to create kinetic sculpture, which have led to collaborations with scientists at University of Michigan. This work is based on the nanoscale, translating paper structures to micro folds. These investigations extend to visualizing cellular division and solar cell development. Researchers see paper engineering as a metaphor for scientific principles; Matt sees their inquiry as a basis for artistic inspiration.
Jason Sims is interested in the ways in which people create meaning in their lives – how perception and choice directly impact our reality. His work seeks to explore what it means to exist, inviting contemplation of the structures in which we live, physically and socially, and presenting an endless expanse of infinite possibility. Jason has had several solo exhibitions and exhibited in numerous group shows throughout Australia and abroad, including SafARI, an unofficial fringe event to the 2010 Sydney Biennial of Contemporary Art held at Firstdraft. In 2010, ArtBank commissioned three of Jason’s pieces to add to their collection. He has been a finalist in the Tom Malone Prize for the past 3 consecutive years and recently had his work collected by the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
