THE VISIONARIES
“I gave madison her first Betsey Johnson dress when she was 3,” says Lorna York of her daughter. Madison, now 25, has come a long way from those punk-tinged chiffon frocks: She’s the fresh-faster poster girl of her eponymouse art gallery, run in collaboration with her mother. With an A-list roster of international art heavyweights, the airy La Jolla space is an ideal backdrop for the Yorks’ aesthetic: modern with just enough edge to set them apart from the blondes who flock to their be-seen opening. “It’s fearless fashion,” says Madison of the way she and her mother coordinate their outfits for such festivities. Their fave source: La Jolla’s Laura Gambucci boutique. “We end up wearing a lot of black because it complements the artwork.” Lorna got her start as a private art dealer in Palm Beach before opening the Prospect Street gallery in 2006. Today, thanks to online marketplaces like Artsy, the gallery has garnered mega clients that are global, not just local. And they’re constantly clamoring for works by NYC’s Hunt Slonem and the wildly popular street artist Retna. “The paradigm has changed,” says Lorna, who channeled former model Patti Hansen for this shoot. “I love women that dress their own age. It’s sexy.”
